THE first new public hospital in almost 40 years is open for business.
The $170 million Palmerston Regional Hospital, jointly funded by the Australian and Northern Territory Governments, began seeing patients in its Emergency department from 10am today.
The state-of-the-art hospital will operate as a campus of Royal Darwin Hospital.
It is providing a range of specialised health care services, including: emergency department operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week; state-of-the-art rehabilitation; day surgery; general medical ward; maternity services; geriatric evaluation and management (GEM) and outpatient clinics.
OPINION: HOSPITAL SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN BUILT
Non-clinical support services include: pharmacy; pathology; medical imaging; medical records; and learning and development.
General Manager Catherine O’Connell said the PRH is a centre of excellence and has been future proofed by building it on a 45-hectare site.
Ms O’Connell said services would be brought online in stages to minimise the impact of any glitches.
“Like many hospital openings, our services will open gradually and increase over time,” she said.
“This is a hospital to be proud of.”
