The Queensland Police has said it will consider the ramifications of a social media comment – made on a photo of former NT police officer Zachary Rolfe with Ben Roberts-Smith holidaying in Bali – which jokes about “cops/murderers and war criminals”.

The comment appears to have been made by Mr Rolfe.

Mr Rolfe is currently appealing a decision which had him dismissed from his constable position with the Northern Territory Police, after he was last year acquitted on all charges over the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker.

He has been a long-time friend of Mr Roberts-Smith, the disgraced SAS soldier found by a civil court to have been complicit in the murder of four unarmed prisoners, since they spent time together in the military.

Mr Roberts-Smith denies those allegations and is appealing the decision.

The pair was pictured partying in a pool/spa at Finns Beach Club in Bali, with a Queensland Police Service officer.

A profile with the handle ‘zaccourtier’ made a comment on the now-private Instagram post joking “Just a couple of cops/murderers and war criminals havin (sic) a lovely afternoon in the sun”.

The account has since been deleted, but did have a selfie of Rolfe as its profile picture, with Courtier being his mother’s birth name.

Mr Rolfe in June lost an appeal to be exempt from answering questions in the coronial inquest into the fatal shooting of Mr Walker, who the officer shot three times.

The Queensland Police Service is currently looking into the suggestion one of its officers replied to the comment saying “just a couple of brothers having (beer emoji)”.

In recent years, the QPS has made changes to its social media policy, after investigating online posts made by its officers.

The guidelines state an officer must not “engage in activities online, posting comments or uploading images that would bring the Service into disrepute”.

Mr Roberts-Smith is Australia’s most decorated living veteran having been awarded the Victoria Cross, however in June the Federal Court found on the balance of probabilities he committed war crimes including murder while in Afghanistan.
