The Acting NT Children’s Commissioner Sally Sievers has raised concerns around the Territory Government’s proposed youth justice reform measures.
“The Children’s Commissioner is very concerned about the move away from evidence based approaches to community safety and the impact these new measures will have on our children and young people,” she said in a statement.

“International jurisdictions where major improvements have been achieved in youth offending and recidivism, have at their core, reform measures focused on reducing the numbers of children and young people on remand.

“We need to provide place-based solutions in areas of community concern and stay the course on the generational change that will ensure safety and wellbeing of our children and the wider community for the rest of the Territory.”
The statement comes after the NT Government revealed it would make legislative changes to crackdown on a perceived spike in youth crime.
