THE violent murderer known as the NT’s Hannibal Lecter has promised to continue “playing up” until he is moved out of Darwin Prison, where he is kept in almost total isolation for the protection of other inmates.

In the Northern Territory Supreme Court on Monday, Andy Albury said he had “been waiting for the right weapon” to hurt someone in prison since he was moved from Alice Springs.

Albury is serving life without parole for the brutal 1983 murder of 29-year-old Gloria Pindan on Mitchell St.

He stabbed her 28 times, cut off her nipples and pulled out one of her eyes.

Corrections moved Albury from Alice Springs in the hope he could be kept in Darwin’s Complex Behavioural Unit, but constant breaches of prison rules have meant he has spent most of his time in the Section 5 high security unit.

“The only time they let me out of the cells is when everyone else is in lockdown,” he said.

Albury, who appeared by video link, said he spat on a prison guard because “I didn’t like him”.

“They were going to tell me to do the anger management course and the violent offender’s program ... I don’t see the point,” he said.

Albury, now 54, has been in prison since he was 21 years old, and said he wanted to stay in Alice Springs where his brother visited him every Sunday and would buy him a Coke and a Mars Bar from the vending machines.

He also said prices for cordial, milk and Scotch Finger biscuits were more expensive in Darwin.

“Us (maximum security) red shirts, there’s no incentive to behave,” he said.

Justice Stephen Southwood adjourned the review until September, to give more time to assess Albury’s behaviour in Darwin.
