Nhulunbuy nurse Kim Bryant accused of illegally selling alcohol in restricted area

A NHULUNBUY nurse has been slapped with a conviction for selling a “significant amount” of alcohol to vulnerable drinkers in the township’s restricted zones

A NHULUNBUY nurse has been slapped with a conviction for selling a “significant amount” of alcohol to vulnerable drinkers in the township’s restricted zones.

Gove District Hospital nurse Kim Bryant, 42, pleaded guilty to seven counts of selling liquor in the East Arnhem township’s alcohol-restricted area, but only received a conviction for two of the charges.

She also had four charges of unlawfully supplying cannabis withdrawn.

On top of the convictions, Bryant was fined $200 plus $1050 in levies when she fronted Nhulunbuy Court earlier this month.

Legal sources told the NT News they believed the penalty was “incredibly low” for the “significant amount” of alcohol Bryant sold.

According to her employer, the Top End Health Service, Bryant has been working in Gove Hospital in “a non-clinical role”.

A spokeswoman for the service said the incident had been reported to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority.

“Hospital management is now seeking advice through its human resources unit on appropriate action under relevant policy and legislation, taking into account what constitutes an irrelevant criminal record under the NT Anti-Discrimination Act,” she said.

Rules surrounding alcohol purchase in Nhulunbuy mean residents can’t buy takeaway alcohol without a liquor permit.

Even with a permit it’s illegal for anyone to drink alcohol in public places, with penalties applicable.

Nhulunbuy Police Senior Sergeant John Worrall said selling alcohol without a licence targeted “the most vulnerable”.

“Alcohol is a significant contributor to anti-social behaviour within town and in the wider community,” he said.

“Anyone selling alcohol without a permit will come to the attention of police.”

Nhulunbuy residents are permitted to drink without permits in licensed bars, clubs and restaurants.
