New website shows NT’s IVF success rates on par with rest of Australia, proving couples don’t need to travel for treatment

IVF: What are your chances for success?

THE Northern Territory’s only fertility clinic is achieving IVF success rates on par with those interstate, according to a new government-run website, showing prospective parents don’t need to travel to receive quality treatment.

The Your IVF Success website, launched by the federal government last month, provides independent and impartial information from every fertility clinic in Australia so prospective parents can compare statistics and make informed decisions.

The data shows the NT’s only fertility clinic, Repromed Darwin, is producing results in line with the national average.

Those results include an 85 per cent success rate for cycles with a single embryo transferred, compared to the national average of 90 per cent, and 5 per cent of stimulated cycles cancelled before egg retrieval compared to 8 per cent nationally.

The clinic also recorded only 3 per cent of births resulting in twins or triplets, compared to 4 per cent Australia-wide.

Repromed Darwin medical director Professor Kelton Tremellen said the data showed NT couples seeking IVF treatment didn’t need to travel interstate to receive quality treatment.

“There’s a perception that if you need high-order treatment, you need to leave the Territory, and we know about a third of all IVF cycle patients do leave the Territory and go to other capital cities,” he said.

“The point of this is that our science is up to scratch in the city, and there’s no need to get on a plane and go elsewhere.

“We’re doing really well in Darwin.”

Dr Tremellen said the new website was timely because there had recently been an increase in the number of Territorians seeking IVF treatment in the NT, due to travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve found that with COVID-19, and with people not being able to fly out as much, there’s been a big increase in the number of people having IVF in the NT, and people are happy with the treatment they’re receiving,” he said.

“It’s increased by about 50 per cent. It’s really gone up.”

Berrimah couple Stephen and Anita Cardona conceived their baby girl Eliyang, now three months, after receiving IVF treatment at Repromed Darwin.

Mrs Cardona said the couple had considered travelling interstate but ultimately decided against it.

“We thought about it, but the process is already expensive and that was going to add onto the cost even more, and I just thought ‘there’s no need, there’s a clinic here’,” she said.

“I don’t know how different the clinics are down south … but for us, it was a great experience.”
