PALMERSTON will get a new primary school to meet the demand of the Territory’s fastest growing city.

Despite the construction of a Catholic school in Zuccoli, numbers at public schools have not eased.

The new school will be built adjacent to Mother Teresa Catholic Primary School and have the capacity to enrol up to 288 students.

Construction has been brought forward by more than two years, with the school expected to open in Term 1, 2020.

Stage one of the major construction project encompasses a preschool – with capacity for up to 88 students – and eight primary school classrooms with capacity for more than 200 students.

This morning, Education Minister Selena Uibo said construction would begin in a few months, two years earlier than original plans.

“This is the fastest growing region in the NT, we’ve got to support the students and families,” she said.

“We’ve got $18 million allocated in the project.”

The tender, which was released yesterday, can be found at tendersonline.nt.gov.au
