TEN football-loving residents in Gapuwiyak will soon have their dream homes. Their homes have been built with an unobstructed view of footy games on the local oval.

The homes in the East Arnhem community were built in a new 26-lot subdivision and the 10 residents worked with the NT Government’s remote housing team to build the houses facing the oval. There are six three-bedroom homes, a three-bedroom duplex and a two-bedroom duplex.

WTD Constructions Pty Ltd was awarded the $4.7m contract last September to build the homes, with residents involved from the planning stage through to construction.

A further 16 houses will be built in the new subdivision following further consultation with the community.

Remote Housing and Town Camps Minister Chancey Paech has recently travelled thousands of kilometres throughout the Gwoja, Arafura and Arnhem electorates to inspect housing works and meet community members.

Mr Paech says the housing has made a big difference to people in the Territory’s most isolated areas.

“To see people who have lived in overcrowded housing finally have new homes of their own is heartening,” he said. “Watching the homes rollout and hearing stories from delighted tenants and community members who have found job opportunities in the construction industry assures me our Government is on the right track.”

West of Gapuwiyak in Maningrida, families have moved into seven new homes. Built by NT company Scott Hammet Building and Carpentry, which was awarded a $5.3m contract to deliver 12 new houses, these homes are also in a new subdivision that includes 30 serviceable lots.

The five remaining homes are set to be completed this dry season, including two four-bedroom homes, a three-bedroom home and two two-bedroom duplexes.

A further six homes are expected to be completed by October. In Borroloola, Cairns Industries, assisted by five locals, has built two new three-bedroom homes at Garawa One camp while about 10 locals have been employed by Binjari Community Aboriginal Corporation to upgrade four houses under the Room to Breathe program.

New homes are nearing completion in Milikapiti, Jilkminggan, Hermannsburg, Mt Liebig, Daguragu, Wadeye and several communities across the Barkly.
