Eyewitness Dianne Fisher, who came across the scene while on her way to Darwin, said the bovine corpses had been moved off the vehicle prior to her and other truck drivers arriving.

It appeared as if the good Samaritans were unaware of a man still trapped in the car.

“It took me a while to actually register there was someone in the car,” Ms Fisher said.

“It was a mess.”

“You knew the cows landed on the roof because there was poo on the roof where it had landed.”

Ms Fisher said emergency crews were likely sent from Alice Springs.

“There was over an hour between the incident and when everyone arrived,” she said.

Trucks who came across the wreckage surrounded the crash site to prevent other drivers from colliding with it.
