A man charged with the murder of a 36-year-old man outside the Cavenagh Street Woolworths supermarket in central Darwin at the weekend has faced court for the first time.

Jeremy Cooper, 28, appeared in the dock at the Darwin Local Court on Wednesday dressed in a black singlet and black shorts where he was represented by Darwin silk Jon Tippet KC.

Cooper also stands charged with going armed with an offensive weapon and possessing a trafficable quantity of a schedule two drug.

In seeking for the case to be adjourned until November 8 for a preliminary examination mention, Mr Tippett requested prosecutors be given a shorter period than usual to produce CCTV footage of the incident.

“These things have a tendency to blow out anyway,” he said.

“You give them six weeks and they tend to blow out for another couple of weeks and the prosecution just languishes.”

Prosecutor Isabella Schmidt said the file “was only just created and we don’t currently have any CCTV” but Mr Tippet countered that they did.

“They do have the CCTV, we know that,” he said.

“They’ve got it now, they could give it to us … by tomorrow.”

In adjourning the case, Judge John Neill gave prosecutors three weeks to turn over “any and all CCTV, body-worn footage and (electronic record of interview) material”.

Cooper was remanded in custody until November 8.

His arrest came nearly 60 hours after the 36-year-old man was allegedly stabbed in front of a group of people on Cavenagh St just after midnight on Saturday.

Police on Tuesday said bystanders tried to perform first aid on the Wadeye resident before paramedics arrived.

The older man later died in hospital due to the severe abdominal injuries.
