Police reveal more details about horror motorcycle crash

UPDATED, MAY 19 THUR 3PM: FRIENDS of a 25-year-old man killed in a horror motorcycle crash in Palmerston were first at the scene, police have revealed.

The man’s parents visited the Palmerston police station on Thursday morning to speak to Territory police.

Senior Sergeant John Ginnane said the parents were doing as best as they could.

“I suppose you can say they are coping as best as they can,” Sgt Ginnane said.

“Shortly afterwards, I understand some of his personal friends drove past and were confronted with the scene.

“Motorcycles are a particularly dangerous pieces of equipment to be riding, there’s a reason why learner drivers are prohibited from driving certain types of motorcycles because they are far too powerful for them.”

The horrific incident is the second death on Territory roads this week, which is National Road Safety Week.

Within a 24-hour period until Thursday, Greater Darwin police “broke a record” for the most speeding fines issued in one day, handing out more than 200 tickets.

“(It) has broken a record by some margin, it is roughly triple more than we usually issue,” Sgt Ginnane said.

“It’s quite apparent if people will not learn or they will not listen to the messages then they’re going to have to be compelled to take notice of the financial consequences of their actions.

“We’re in the middle of Road Safety Week now and we’ve had two lives lost on our roads, every one of these lives lost was preventable in some way.”

INITIAL: A motorcyclist on his learner’s has been killed in a horrific crash in Palmerston.

The crash happened on Chung Wah Tce shortly after 10pm on Wednesday.

A witness immediately reported the crash, but the man, 25, was declared dead at the scene.

“A full investigation is now underway to determine the circumstances behind the crash, and a comprehensive report will be prepared for the Coroner,” Senior Sergeant John Ginnane said.

“At this early stage in the investigative process it would appear that a person holding a learner’s permit to ride a motorcycle has spent several hours in a licensed premises before the collision.

“(He) was riding a motorcycle too powerful for the conditions of his licence, and was travelling at excessive speed immediately before he lost control and died.”

The death brings the road toll on Territory roads to 20 for 2022, almost three times the amount recorded at the same time in 2021.

“Again we are seeing an over-representation of younger drivers having their lives unnecessarily cut short,” Sgt Ginnane said.

“Yesterday, on the same day this latest life was lost, police issued 201 Traffic Infringement Notices for speeding offences in the Greater Darwin area alone.

“If people wonder why police have no tolerance for drivers exceeding the speed limit – last night’s tragedy is why.”
