HIGH-PROFILE New South Wales barrister Lloyd Babb SC has been appointed as the Territory’s new, permanent Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr Babb spent several weeks in the NT earlier this year while successfully prosecuting the case against triple murderer Ben Hoffmann, who eventually pleaded guilty in November.

He takes over from incumbent Nick Papas QC, who has been acting in the role following the retirement of the long serving Jack Karczewski QC in July.

In a statement, Mr Babb said he had “very much enjoyed my recent experience living and working in the NT” during the Hoffmann trial.

“I have already had the chance to work with some bright and talented Territory lawyers and look forward to leading the Territory prosecutorial service and building our capacity going forward,” he said.

Mr Babb comes into the role having recently served as the NSW DPP and has a career spanning almost three decades as a barrister.

As well as experience at the private Bar, Mr Babb has extensive experience in a number of other senior government legal roles including NSW Crown Advocate and Director of the NSW Criminal Law Review Division.

Acting Attorney-General Kate Worden welcomed Mr Babb to the Territory, noting his extensive experience in the legal profession.

“We acknowledge the service Mr Lloyd Babb SC will bring to the Territory to create better justice system outcomes for Territorians,” she said.

Mr Babb is first permanent silk appointed to the NT DPP following the resignation of former deputy director, Matt Nathan SC, and senior Crown prosecutor, David Morters SC, before him.

Mr Babb commences in the role on March 14 next year.
