Australia is 'going to the Moon'

IT was all systems go as the launch boom for the rockets was craned into place at the Arnhem Space Centre ahead of the Chief Minister’s visit on Thursday.

Designed by NASA, the boom will brace the rockets for countdown during the launches in 2022.

The impressive structure marks a key milestone in the development of the Arnhem Space Port that will boost employment and education in the region.

Equatorial Launch Australia chief executive Carley Scott said it was exciting to see the site coming together.

“For the first time ever NASA will be launching their sounding rockets from a commercial space port – right here in the Territory,” she said.

“This has been the most excited I have ever been to see a slab of concrete but I know how much work has gone into building a premium world-class space port.”

Last month, Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the government would continue to support NASA and Equatorial Launch Australia to ensure the project was one for the record books.

“We will continue to help this incredible project make history – the first ever launch by NASA at a commercial site outside the USA … as the launch is yet another major jobs boost for our economic rebound from the coronavirus crisis,” Mr Gunner said.

Mr Gunner and his team will visit Arnhem Space Centre on Thursday to tour the site and speak about the project’s sustainability.

The commercial space port hopes NASA’s endeavours will be just the first of many international partnerships that explore and use the phenomena of space.

The Arnhem Space Centre is on Yolngu land.
