LATEST designs for the new Larrakia Cultural Centre (LCC) being built at the Darwin Waterfront have been released by the Larrakia Development Corporation (LDC).
The LDC has worked with the Larrakia Cultural Centre Working Group and locally based designers Rossi Architecture and Susan Dugdale and Associates, to progress the project over the past six months.
As design progresses towards full completion, the LDC will undertake procurement of a head contractor to carry out site works and construction and next month will hold an information event for the local contracting industry.
The cultural centre is predicted to have a $48m positive economic impact on the Darwin economy over its first 15 years.
The design includes an exhibition space where Larrakia history and culture will be told through interactive design and displays.
It will showcase artefacts that will be repatriated from museums across the country and the globe.
The centre’s other primary purpose is to provide language and culture classes for the Larrakia people and visiting public.

The design incorporates classrooms for this specific purpose. These will be operated by the LDC using Larrakia language speakers to lead classes.
The cultural centre will have a landscaped garden that enables the community to enjoy the LCC’s open spaces and include three vegetation habitats that are found within Larrakia country. Each of the habitat spaces – monsoon rainforest and waterfall, savannah and coastal, include interactive and educational play spaces that encourage families to visit, stay and enjoy while overlooking the harbour.
The Morrison government has committed $2m over two years for the Larrakia Development Corporation to undertake the detailed design and planning for the centre as part of the Darwin City Deal.
Larrakia Development Corporation chief executive Nigel Browne said that the cultural centre would support Indigenous tourism in Australia’s northernmost city, and was a much-needed post-Covid-19 commercial development.
“This development will allow us to protect our future, preserve our past and help build our Territory economy,” Mr Browne said.
