The Opposition has promised to install lights at the Southern District Crocs home-ground if it wins the NT election – with Labor quickly matching the pledge.

Southern Districts Football Club will soon be able to play night games at their home-ground after the Country Liberal’s $1m election promise to install lights at Norbuilt Oval was quickly matched by Labor.

The club has long lobbied for lights to be installed at Norbuilt Oval, Freds Pass, arguing it is a crucial feature for the club to expand and to keep players safe from extreme heat.

The club wrote to the government in late 2022 requesting funding for several light towers, estimating up to $1m was required to install an off grid light system run by a diesel generator.

On Wednesday morning the CLP committed to funding lights if elected.

“This is a major win for the Southern District Crocs,” Goyder candidate Andrew Mackay said.

“Lights at Norbuilt Oval will expand the prospects for AFL and sports fans more broadly in the rural area.

“As a proud long term local I couldn’t be happier to support the Crocs.

The Labor government for years has failed to listen to the needs of the club, but the CLP Team will deliver.”

Daly candidate Kris Civitarese said it was “a long overdue boost”.

Deputy Opposition Leader Gerard Maley said the commitment would help the club’s 26 teams and almost 800 members.

“The Crocs are one of the largest clubs in the AFLNT competition,” he said.

“Lights mean we can schedule games at more appropriate times to get kids and adults out of the heat.”

But at a press conference an hour later, Labor affirmed they would match the commitment.

“To me it’s a non issue, if we’re making small, million-dollar commitments and announcements from the CLP, I’m more than happy just to meet those,” Chief Minister Eva Lawler said.

“I know the club has been very keen to get lights … we want to see kids play sport we want Territorians to not be playing sport in the middle of the day, the hottest time of the day.

“Often AFL have women’s games during the middle of the day – I would much prefer to see sports under lights, particularly women’s sports.”
