LOCALS and visitors alike enjoyed one of the last breaths of ideal dry season conditions under the cloudless Top End sky at the Katherine Turf Club 2022 Races on Saturday.
The day is the most anticipated event on the calendar for locals, this year attracting more than 2000 racegoers by 1.30pm in the day, with more frocks and boots spilling through the gates in the ensuing hours.
Katherine Turf Club treasurer Angela Harding said the day was a success with crowd numbers similar to previous years.
“Fair few people out there, it looks like people are happy when I walked through before,” Ms Harding said. “Today is about having a good time, making sure everyone else is having a good day and enjoying the races and events like Fashions on the Field.”
All the way from Canberra, Cate and Dean Harvey capitalised on the opportunity to immerse themselves in the bush races atmosphere while passing through town.
“We’re very fortunate to be in Katherine today so we can watch the Katherine Cup and support the locals,” Ms Harvey said. “I love it. It’s very genuine. It’s an eclectic mix of everybody which is great.”
