NINE people were taken to hospital last night after a car collided with a minibus in a serious crash on a major Top End bridge.

NINE people were taken to hospital last night after a car collided with a minibus in a serious crash on the Katherine River Bridge.
Shortly before 7pm, a car containing two adults and a three-year-old child collided with a minibus taxi with six people on board on the town side of the bridge.
Police, firefighters and paramedics attended the scene.
The driver of the car was trapped inside his vehicle and had to be cut free by members of the NT Fire and Rescue Service.
He sustained arm, leg and facial injuries.

All nine people involved in the crash were transported to Katherine Hospital for either treatment for non-life-threatening injuries or as a precaution.
Both vehicles were significantly damaged.
St John Ambulance director of ambulance services Andrew Thomas said the crash had been a “huge incident” for emergency service crews and their response had been “outstanding”.
“A number of off-duty paramedics assisted, including an off-duty paramedic who witnessed the crash and remained on the scene and assisted until all cases were completed,” he said.
“The teamwork between St John NT staff and other emergency and allied health services was of the highest standard and we would like to extend our thanks and appreciation for all those involved.”

The Katherine River Bridge was closed to traffic until about 7am today as police worked to clear the crash scene.
Police investigations into the incident are continuing.
