TERRITORY Alliance candidate Steven Klose has revealed plans to overhaul the public service and reintroduce the tradies scheme.
The candidate in this weekend’s Johnston by-election said his party would run the public sector “like a business” if successful at the August general election by setting strict performance standards and possibly scrapping executive contracts.
“We have to be realistic in recognising the economy is seriously lagging,” Mr Klose said.
“You’ve got very highly paid executives and middle managers in those government departments who need to make a business plan and meet targets set by government.
“If they’re not doing that, the question will be raised if we need advertise the job for somebody who can.

“We don’t want the public service to think they’ve got a bucket of money and if they run out they can ask for more by drawing down extra funds.
“Another thing is those executive contracts. Maybe they aren’t working any more and we need to put them back into permanent public service positions on a different, lower pay scale.”
Mr Klose also wants to reintroduce the NT tradies scheme, which saw homeowners/occupiers apply to receive vouchers of up to $2000 for minor home improvements.
Labor candidate Joel Bowden spent Tuesday brushing off criticisms from CLP’s Josh Thomas that he did not “understand” the Territory.
“I was born outside of the Territory, that’s a fact, but I grew up in Alice Springs,” he said.
“I spent five or so years back in the Territory since I went to Melbourne.
“Hopefully, people understand that AFL is played out of Melbourne, and when you’re playing 14 years of AFL for the Richmond Football Club you play it out of Melbourne.”

Mr Thomas said he was feeling confident ahead of Saturday’s by-election.
“I’m from this community, I know many, many people, I’ve got many lifelong friends, okay,” he said.
“You just have to go anywhere in this electorate, any street and I know someone or someone knows me or knows my family.”
