‘Jabiru has the potential to be a real drawcard for Territorians and visitors alike’: Chief Minister

A PLAN to save Jabiru will take another step in 2021 with the start of upgrades to the electricity network of Kakadu National Park’s biggest town

A PLAN to save Jabiru will take another step in 2021 with the start of upgrades to the electricity network of Kakadu National Park’s biggest town.

The network will be compatible with renewable energy from a hybrid power station.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the $10m upgrades would help establish Jabiru as a vibrant cultural centre.

“Jabiru has the potential to be a real drawcard for Territorians and visitors alike,” he said.

“These upgrades will not only mean Jabiru residents have access to the very best services but work will continue to flow for local tradies.”

The project will lead to other services being upgraded and introduced to the town, including a new education precinct, multi-use health clinic, the NBN rollout, mobile connectivity and a government services hub.

Mr Gunner said the project would help create sustainable jobs in the township.

“We know how important it is to keep Territorians working during the coronavirus crisis, and this investment will see plenty of local jobs in the pipeline,” he said.

The works, which are being funded from the government’s $135.5m Jabiru investment pool, will be completed over the next two years.
