‘It showcases the way our industry should be working with landlords’: Darwin Waterfront businesses band together to relaunch popular beach club

Darwin Waterfront businesses have officially banded together, submitting an application to re-establish the popular Beach Club.

DARWIN Waterfront businesses have officially banded together, submitting an application to re-establish the popular Beach Club, which was unearthed through COVID-19’s emergency powers.

If the catering authority element is approved for their licences, it means Bannsang Darwin, Chow, Curve Restaurant and Bar, Fiddler’s Green, Hot Tamale, the Oyster Bar, Snapper Rocks, The Coffee Club, the Precinct Tavern and Wharf One/Bella would be able to serve takeaway liquor to patrons on day beds on the Waterfront’s lawns.

Hospitality NT chief executive Alex Bruce said the body had a lot of members at the Waterfront who benefited from the Beach Club, which proved popular with the Darwin community.

“You still can’t go to Bali or southeast Asia so it’s good that it replicates that,” he said.

“We’re really supportive of seeing that (application) process under the existing framework go through, so we can welcome the Beach Club back into the mix and get it back on track.

“It showcases the way our industry should be working with landlords across the Territory to see how innovative we can become with other spaces.”

Darwin Waterfront corporation chief executive Sam Burke said a catering authority would allow a venue to sell takeaway alcohol with food in limited circumstances.

“The Darwin Waterfront Corporation is working with its venues, government and liquor licensing to apply for catering authorities,” he said.

The Waterfront Corporation hopes to have authorities in place in May.
