Hundreds evacuated after major Territory river’s rapid rise

HUNDREDS of people have been evacuated along a major Territory river due to rapidly rising waters

HUNDREDS of people have been successfully evacuated from Jilkminggan community along the Roper River due to rapidly rising waters.

NT Police said late on Thursday around 250 residents were safely transferred to temporary accommodation in Mataranka.

“(Thursday’s) afternoon’s evacuation showed us how well the community can work together to make things happen,” Commander Janelle Tonkin said.

“In a matter of hours, authorities were able to safely remove around 250 people from Jilkminggan, and the Mataranka community was outstanding in their support to accommodate so many people at short notice.

“We thank everyone for their efforts and support today.

“Access to the community remains cut off and we ask that the public stay away until it has been declared safe.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation and will provide a further update in the morning.”

Meanwhile weather warnings from the Bureau of Meteorology remain in place, although heavy rainfall is expected to have eased with a return to seasonal showers and storms from today.

As of yesterday afternoon a Moderate Flood Warning for the Daly River remained in place,

with the river level is likely to peak near 13.80 metres during Sunday.

Flood Safety Advice:

The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:

– Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.

– Prepare for flooding and move away while safe to do so.

– Don’t drive into floodwaters.
