A MARE has died after two arrows were fired into its belly in a sickening attack at Fannie Bay.

The 19-year-old horse, Pearly, was found by a teenager at Fannie Bay Equestrian Club just after 4pm Wednesday while on her way for an afternoon ride.

The tight-knit club was left in shock as they calmed Pearly while waiting for the vet to arrive.

Late Wednesday Pearly was treated by veterinarian Susannah Smith who had feared the arrows had gone into the abdomen, which meant the horse would have had to go under local anaesthetic for the arrows to be removed.

But the injuries were too severe, and Pearly was put down late last night.

It’s not known when Pearly was shot with the arrows.

Caretakers let the horses out into the paddock fronting Alec Fong Lim Drive on Tuesday night and it wasn’t until 4pm Wednesday that Pearly was found with the arrows in her.

Fannie Bay Equestrian Club president Mel Brenton said the whole club was in disbelief.

“I’ve been coming to Fannie Bay Equestrian Club since 1979 and we have never had an incident like this,” she said.

“I am incredibly angry because Pearly hasn’t been hit by an arrow she’s been hit by someone aiming an arrow at her, it’s not been her fault.

“Whoever did this is a low-life individual.”

Pearly was rented by three families with young children and was a popular fixture in the club’s pony come and try days.

“I just cannot fathom why someone would do that to a lovely 19-year-old mare that gives pony rides to many small children,” Ms Brenton said.

“I just cannot understand why someone would do that.”

Ms Brenton said the safety of people and animals at the club was her next priority.

“My concern now is safety and the safety of our members and our horses is paramount,” she said.

She said the paddock where Pearly was hit won’t be used.

Police also intend to recover the two arrows to conduct forensic tests in the hope of gaining clues as to who shot Pearly.

No other horses were attacked.

Last month a number of agile wallabies were mowed down and killed by a driver on East Point Reserve.

It is not yet known if the two incidents are linked.
