THE Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC) has signed a historic agreement with three other organisations to increase sport and recreational activities for young people in Groote Eylandt and Bickerton Island.
The memorandum of understanding between the ALC, East Arnhem Regional Council, Bush Fit Mob and AFL NT sets out a co-ordinated approach to upgrading facilities and sharing resources.
The ALC is also currently funding a major sport and recreation infrastructure upgrade.
ALC chair Mr Tony Wurramarrba said the archipelago had a serious shortfall of healthy activities for children.

“We believe sport and recreation can break down barriers between Anindilyakwa clans,” he said.
“As the rules of sport and recreation are not based on clan systems.
“We also believe more mentors can provide positive role models for at risk young people.”
Bush Fit Mob director Nick Kenny said kids in the Groote archipelago deserved the same opportunities as those on mainland Australia.
“The organisations of this MOU can pool skills and resources to create opportunities for kids that have not been available on Groote Eylandt ever before,” he said.
