Tropical Cyclone Warning for the NT: BoM

The remote community of Robinson River on the Northern Territory and Queensland border in the Gulf of Carpentaria is battening down for a cyclone late  Monday.

The remote community of Robinson River on the Northern Territory and Queensland border in the Gulf of Carpentaria is battening down for a cyclone late  Monday.

The Bureau of Meteorology said latest tracking has a category 2 Cyclone Esther passing directly over the small township with a population of around 220 people.

Police said an emergency evacuation of vulnerable people is currently underway but the bulk of the community will ride the cyclone out in their homes or the local cyclone shelter.

They said there was no concern about the quality of building structures.

The BOM said the cyclone will bring gale force winds and flash flooding to the region around Robinson River, Borroloola and Burketown.

Rainfalls of between 100 to 200mm are expected.

Police have issued a warning to stay off flooded roads and away from swollen rivers and creeks.

After crossing Robinson River the system will bring heavy rain across the Top End and the Northern Barkly region from Tuesday and later into the week.While the system isn’t expected to generate rain over Darwin and the western Top End until midweek, there may be thunderstorms across the Top End in the next few days.

Warning zone: Port Roper to Kowanyama, including Groote Eylandt, Borroloola, Mornington Island, and Karumba, and adjacent inland areas between Borroloola and Normanton, including Doomadgee.

Watch zone: Inland areas between Limmen National Park and Century Mine, including Brunette Downs.
