MIHALIS Halkitis OAM will be remembered for his fierce leadership and dedication after his passing on Sunday, aged 89.

One of the Territory’s leading Greek business pioneers, Mr Halkitis came to Australia in 1955 with the plan to work for two years.

He returned to Greece, married and at the urge of his father, moved back to Australia with the goal to provide a good life for his family.

In 1960 with his brother Theo, Mr Halkitis established civil engineering company Halkitis Brothers, which became one of the Territory’s leading concreting businesses.

He laid the foundations for Larrakeyah, Wagaman and more, and was a key builder in the construction of the Kakadu Hwy.

Son Nikita Halkitis said his father’s work ethic was unmatched.

“He had a drive, to want to achieve for himself and his family and have a better life,” he said.

“He was just a hardworking family man, he obviously worked for his family and his community.”

Mr Halkitis was president of the Kalymnian Brotherhood from 1980 to 1987, during which he spearheaded the construction of the Kalymnian Brotherhood hall and its grounds.
