Territorians who give back to their community, whether by championing mental health, or promoting health and wellness have been recognised at the 2024 Community Achievement Awards.
The awards, held at the Double Tree by Hilton Esplanade Darwin on Friday night recognised some of the Territory’s most charitable.
Hajrah Kamran of Leanyer was the recipient of the Awards Australia Charitable Foundation Local Legend Award for his work championing mental health, youth empowerment and inclusivity.
Ms Kamran is the youth coordinator for the United Muslims of NT, the vice chair at the Two Two One Mental Health Charity and president of the CDU Women’s Collective.
Her roles allow her to address mental health stigma through counselling, conduct mental health workshops and has secured funding for suicide prevention initiatives, while pursuing three degrees.
Remote Laundries Project won the prestigious Palmerston GP Super Clinic Improving Health through Connection to Country / Culture Award beating a strong field of community achievers.
The project is a sustainable, culturally sensitive community support established by the Aboriginal Investment Group in 2019 providing vital laundry services in remote communities.
It has completed more than 50,000 cycles in locations such as Barunga and Gunbalanya and created 71 roles for community enhancing both health and economic independence.
Football Without Borders also found success winning the Zip Print Sports in the Community Award for their dedication to promoting health and wellness through community sporting initiatives.
They unite people from diverse backgrounds into their welcoming environment by using the universal language that is the game of soccer.
Football Without Borders encourages physical activity, teamwork, and a sense of belonging among participants that not only builds health but cultivates lasting friendships.
The Palmerston GP Super Clinic Health and Wellbeing Award went to Amber NT for their work in ensuring families don’t face the journey of loss alone.
The company was set up by two mothers in 1985 after they had experienced loss and continues to provide a safe and compassionate space for families going through the grieving process.
The group offers counselling through coffee and chat sessions or community events such as a Walk to Remember, with other services spanning grief support and resources for foster families.
Beat the Heat NT was another winning taking home the NT Government Road Safety Award for creating a culture of responsibility and safety among young drivers.
The program engages young drivers and fosters positive interactions with law enforcement by offering a safe, legal racing platform at the Hidden Valley Drag Strip.
Each winner received a prize package including a complimentary membership to The Career College, valued at $594, and a trophy.
