CHIEF Minister Michael Gunner has promised “consequences will flow” as a result of the investigation into the shooting death of a Yuendumu teenager.

At a public meeting in Yuendumu on Tuesday, Mr Gunner told the community members the coronial investigation into Kumanjayi Walker’s death would be conducted independently of police.

He acknowledged calls from community elders for the investigations to be conducted in Yuendumu.

“Because the coroner is independent, even I can’t tell the coroner to do that, but I know the coroner will listen to you,” he told the crowd.

“The coroner will seek to answer those questions you have, those questions I have – what happened what happened that night and why, so justice can be done.

“I can promise you that investigation will be independent and consequences will flow as a result.”

Kumanjayi Walker, 19, died after he was shot in his home by police officers who had gone there to arrest him for breaches of his suspended sentence.

Mr Gunner flew to the community with Deputy Chief Minister Nicole Manison and new NT Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker.
