Gulf of Carpentaria heatwave due to move westward towards Daly Waters

Parts of the Territory have experienced record-breaking hot weather, with more on the way over the coming days.

IF YOU live in the Gulf of Carpentaria region a severe heatwave is here and has already broken heat records, qualifying it as an absolute stinker.

Low-intensity to severe heatwave conditions are present across the northeast NT and will extend across the Gulf country into the western part of the Territory and Top End over the coming days.

Rebecca Patrick Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) meteorologist said the severe heat wave would climb into the 40s and extend westwards towards Daly Waters area.

“Its quite of number of days that we’re experiencing those temperatures in the low 40s,” Ms Patrick said.

“We’re seeing temperatures potentially reaching 42 degrees to 43 degrees in that area as well over the next few days.”

Referring to the NT Government website, Ms Patrick recommended that live people in the heat affected areas to stay indoors, drink lots of fluids, and not plan activities during the heat of the day.

“If they’re more vulnerable people like the elderly, disabled and sick people, then just keep an eye on your neighbours and that kind of thing as well,” she said.

On Tuesday, Centre Island reached 42 degrees which was almost one degree higher than the previous March 2017 record.

McArthur River Mine on Wednesday broke it’s previous March 1998 heat record of 42.4 degrees when it reached a scorching 42.9 degrees.

So if you’re one of those people that feel guilty about turning on the airconditioning … now is the time you should flick it on guilt free.
