THE Queensland regions of Greater Brisbane, Ipswich and Logan have been declared hotspots by Chief Health Officer Dr Hugh Heggie.

From 12.01am on August 1, the City of Brisbane, City of Ipswich and Logan City council areas will be active hotspots.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner said he wasn’t prepared to take the risk of letting an active case slip through the NT’s border.

“While the numbers in Brisbane are still low, the Chief Health Officer has considered the data and advised that the risk of spread in these areas is unacceptably high,” he said.

“I know this may shock people. I know it will disrupt a lot of lives. And I’m sorry about that.”

It means three states now have jurisdictions declared as hotspots, with people who arrive into the Northern Territory from or through a declared hotspot in the last 14 days needing to undertake a 14 day mandatory supervised quarantine at a personal cost of $2500.

The NT has declared the following hotspots to date: All of Victoria, Greater Sydney (NSW), Eurobodalla Shire (NSW) and Port Stephens (NSW).

There are flights scheduled from Brisbane to Darwin and Alice Springs on Saturday.

At this stage it’s understood they will still depart.

Qantas told the NT News on Thursday that, due to demand, the airline had added extra flights from Brisbane to Darwin for the Darwin Cup Carnival weekend.

It is understood the declaration won’t affect the AFL’s announcement of a Dreamtime double header in Darwin.

Essendon, the Gold Coast Suns and Richmond are all based in hubs on the Gold Coast, outside of the hot spots.

It is understood players and their families in the AFL hubs are deemed to be isolated from the outside community, meaning if the Gold Coast were to be declared a hot spot, teams would still be allowed to travel to the NT for games, where they also would not interact with the community.
