Territorians flocked to Darwin International Airport in their best suits and ties on Saturday for CareFlight’s annual Hangar Ball to support the organisation’s lifesaving work.
CareFlight is the primary aeromedical, search and rescue service in the Northern Territory delivering a broad range of services including emergency, rescue and patient care and transport.
CareFlight NT fundraising manager Joann Rutherford got emotional at the generosity of the 430 attendees.
“You could see everyone in the room trying to find a way to give a little more,” she said.
“Even leading up to the ball we had so many people donated these incredible auction items.
“We couldn’t hold this event if it wasn’t for all the donations so we are incredibly grateful.”
While the numbers are still being calculated, Ms Rutherford said an estimated $52,000 was raised from the auctions alone.
“Everyone just went above and beyond and all money raised in the Territory will stay in the Territory,” she said.
“The funds raised on Saturday will go a long way in helping us bring the emergency department to patients in need.”
This year’s Ball honoured the contribution of Dr Clyde Fenton to aeromedicine throughout the 1930s.
Based in Katherine, Dr Fenton piloted his own Gypsy Moth aircraft to transport his medical skills to patients in remote locations throughout the Territory.
Each year the event aims to fundraise $100,000 to keep the Northern Territory’s only medical rescue helicopter flying to Territorians in need.
