From Brazil to the classroom in the Top End: Brazilian educator finds her place and purpose in Territory classrooms
After moving from Brazil to study at Charles Darwin University, Rubia found her place and purpose in a Northern Territory classroom. Now thriving as a science teacher at Casuarina Senior College, she’s embracing every opportunity the Top End has to offer.
For Rubia, teaching in the Northern Territory has been a journey of growth, connection, and unforgettable experiences.
Originally from Brazil, Rubia moved to Australia ready for a change of pace.
She began her Master of Teaching (Secondary) at Charles Darwin University and discovered a
lifestyle that offered more sun and more community than she ever expected.
“I moved to the Territory seeking a lifestyle change,” Rubia says.
“Darwin offers the best sunsets, and the short commute to work makes everyday life more enjoyable and less rushed.”
Her first experience in a Territory classroom came through a practicum placement at Casuarina Senior College.
From the very first day, she knew she had found her place.
The school’s supportive structure, strong organisation, and knowledgeable colleagues created a learning environment where she felt encouraged and inspired.
But what truly sealed the deal was the students.
“They made the experience unforgettable, and I couldn’t wait to return after graduating,” Rubia says.
Now a qualified teacher, Rubia teaches Biology, Nutrition, and Scientific Studies at
Casuarina Senior College.
“The diversity of students and the support from the school and colleagues have made it a very rewarding experience so far,” she shares.
Rubia’s personal journey has been just as rich as her professional one.
Since moving to Darwin, she has become an Australian citizen, completed her Master of Teaching, celebrated her engagement at Litchfield National Park, and got married in the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens.
For teachers considering a new chapter, Rubia’s message is simple: embrace the lifestyle, connect with the community, and enjoy the unique rhythm of the Top End.
“People here are friendly, and there are plenty of opportunities for career growth,” she says.
