Fresh data has revealed how many incorporated businesses went belly up – either through voluntary liquidation, restructuring, or other means – in the Territory in the last year alone.

The data, gathered from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, shows 75 incorporated businesses went into various forms of insolvency in the last year in the NT.

In total, 60 businesses went bust were across all industries – from manufacturing to mining, retail to education services – with the data showing a majority of the incorporated businesses were registered to the Darwin area.

Of the businesses, making the list was Throb Nightclub, Munupi Wilderness Lodge, and Palmerston Adventureland, all of which went into creditors’ voluntary liquidation in 2024.

Nightcliff Fermentation Co also went into restructuring in March, before going to restructuring plan in May, the data shows.

Some businesses on the list were registered to “outback” NT or Darwin, while others were registered purely in the outback NT.

In outback NT, the data shows six businesses registered to Alice Springs’ postcode went insolvent, while two businesses registered to the same postcode as Tennant Creek also entered liquidation or administration.

The data did not include charities, leaving the Alice Springs Animal Shelter off the list.

The town’s animal shelter entered voluntary liquidation in July 2024, with the town’s council then taking over the service.

For businesses registered to postcodes for Katherine, Hat Creek Civil went insolvent on December 17 in 2024 via a court liquidation, while Civil Ag and Mine Machinery entered a restructuring period in November.

Of the 60 businesses, 14 of the businesses were incorporated in the NT, however, their principal place of business was conducted interstate.

The data is broken up into eight different types of insolvencies: creditors voluntary liquidation; court liquidation; restructuring; voluntary administration; restructuring plan; controller appointed (except receiver or managing controller); deed of company arrangement; and receiver and manager appointed.
