ANOTHER Territory industry leader has come out supporting the development of a new $300 million sports stadium in Darwin’s CBD, with hopes it will be a beacon for the Top End’s future.

“Having it with a roof lets us think what can we do when it’s hot in the build-up and raining in the Wet,” he said.

“It’s not just football stadiums, it’s for all sorts of sports. when was the last time Darwin had a major music performance? For all Territorians living here, this keeps it the capital city which the people so richly deserve.”

The stadium, which now has two design options including roofs, would seat 25,000 people and has a time frame of a decade.

Mr Hingley said developing the stadium would do wonders for Darwin, the Northern Territory and Northern Australia, and while some could see it as a pie in the sky, it needed to cater for the future.

“We’ve seen case studies around the world that show what a difference having infrastructure makes your destination,” he said.

“I think the challenge is we’ve got to look at infrastructure for future proofing, not what we need today but what do we need 10 years from now, 20 years from now.”

The project’s time frame coincides with Brisbane’s bid to host the 2032 Olympics.
