A COURTROOM descended into chaos when the distraught family of a young hit-and-run victim got into a screaming match with his alleged killer’s loved ones and had to bethreatened with arrest.

Mathew Alexander has been locked up over the death of nine-year-old Palmerston boy Jack Sultan-Page. He remained calm in the dock as the victim’s mum Faye Sultan started yelling accusations.

One of Alexander’s supporters retaliated and more members of the Sultan-Page family joined in the mayhem.

Magistrate Greg Cavanagh threatened to arrest Ms Sultan if she didn’t “shut up”.

“This is a court of law - it’s not a pub where people can scream at each other,” he said.

Ms Sultan had previously yelled out: “I’m never gonna see my boy again for the rest of my life.”

Alexander, dressed in a blue business shirt and black pants, kept his eyes on the ground.

Defence lawyer Tom Kaye applied for bail.

He said Alexander was a cleanskin and had been offered a place at Banyan House rehab centre.

Mr Kaye indicated his client would plead guilty to the charges.

Mr Cavanagh refused bail on the grounds that Alexander was a flight risk.

“The facts indicate he went to some lengths to not be caught,’’ he said.

Mr Cavanagh said Alexander was facing “a certain prison sentence”.

“The sooner the young man finds out what his future is the better,” he said.

The case was adjourned to January 21.

Alexander is facing charges of hit-and-run causing death, cannabis possession, methamphetamine possession, having “equipment to administer” a dangerous drug and using a dangerous drug.

Alexander allegedly hit Jack Sultan-Page on Davoren Cct, in Moulden, on November 1. The boy was riding his bicycle.

Alexander was arrested the next day about 4km from the crime scene.
