ELEVEN people have now recovered from coronavirus in the Northern Territory and it has been two weeks since there were any new confirmed cases, Health Minister Natasha Fyles has announced today.

The announcement of two new COVID-19 recoveries was followed by praise from Ms Fyles for the Territory public for largely adhering to new policies and in turn flattening the curve.

“Because of the work that Territorians have done … it has given our health and logistics professionals time to prepare,” she said.

“The Northern Territory is well placed. We have tested over 3600 people in the Northern Territory, we’ve seen 28 diagnosed cases.”

However, Ms Fyles highlighted that despite recent positive change, it was imperative for Territorians to not slip into complacency, and to maintain adherence to current social distancing policies.

Regional Territorians were also told to feel reassured today, with AUSMAT head of specialist logistics Terry Trewin explaining how their response framework has had ample time to prepare for a possible remote outbreak, thanks to the Territory’s current stall of new cases.

“This time has given us the opportunity to work with Territory health services on infection control, both inside a hospital, and outside the facility as well,” he said.

“That includes our capability to build over 700m squared of field hospital, and a field hospital that is regarded as one of the best facilities in the world.

“That facility also has the capability to be split up and dispatched to smaller regions throughout the Territory if it was needed.”
