Driver charged after boy allegedly pinned and killed in Moulden car park

The driver of a car that allegedly pinned and killed an 11-year-old boy in a Palmerston car park has been charged.

A man who allegedly killed an 11-year-old boy with his car has been charged four months after the incident.

NT Police said the 54-year-old was allegedly under the influence of cannabis when he pinned Daemarius Purcell-Appo against a wall with his car.

The boy died in the Moulden Supermarket car park on December 20 last year.

Police said the man was due to face charges related to the tragedy in Darwin Local Court on May 31.

He has been charged with dangerous driving causing death, careless driving causing death, driving unlicensed, and driving with a prohibited drug in his blood.

Daemarius had arrived in the Territory just days before the incident from Innisfail in Far North Queensland.

The young boy had celebrated his 11th birthday just six weeks before the tragedy.

Mother Keshia Clayton said she had rushed to the scene when she heard of the incident.

She said her son had been getting hot chips from the shops with his cousins.

“I just thought everything was going to be okay,” Ms Clayton said in December.

She had found her son lying unconscious on the ground when she arrived.

“He was just such a good kid,” Ms Clayton said.

“He was perfect in every way.

“From head to toe, he was perfect.”

A small memorial of flowers was left at the scene in the days following the tragedy.

Moulden Supermarket owner Helen Harvey previously told this publication staff and customers tried desperately to help the boy before emergency services arrived.

Ms Harvey said a regular customer ran into the shop after witnessing the incident before using the shop’s defibrillator to try and save the boy.

“It’s just horrific,” she said.

“A horrific tragedy.”

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner in December said the boy’s family was with him at the time of the incident.

“It’s been a horrific incident for them to witness,” he said.
