Close encounter for two of the world’s deadliest predators

TWO of the world’s deadliest predators have been caught on camera in a close encounter, grudgingly acknowledging each other but ultimately keeping out of each other’s way.

A 3.7m croc and a bull shark have been caught on drone footage calmly swimming past each other — about a body’s length apart — off the Cobourg Peninsula, in Arnhem Land.

The fearsome pair were filmed calmly “staying in their lanes” as they cruised past each other in the crystal clear waters, with neither of the top-of-the-food-chain killers moving out of each other’s way.

The video was recorded by Darwin resident Ryan Timms who was in the region in August shooting feral pests.

Mr Timms said he and some mates noticed a croc surfing the waves at Raffles Bay and sent out the drone to find out if it was the resident 4.5m croc out having a go.

They discovered it was a new croc in the bay.

“We sent the drone over to have a better look and that’s when we saw the encounter,” Mr Timms said.

“There were two crocs there and a couple of smaller sharks.”

He said it was unexpected that the two apex predators seemed to ignore each other and swam on by.

“We thought that they’d turn around and have a fight but they respected each other and went their separate ways.”

While the video was taken in August of last year Mr Timms has only recently posted it to social media.

He said he didn’t think much of the footage but at the weekend the 30-second clip had jumped from 4000 views to more than 850,000 views.
