In holy muttrimony, two Top End pooches will tie the knot and ask each other if they will “be ca-mine?”.
It’s official, Peggy Weggy Woo Button and Ollie Wollie Woo will exchange words of affirmation and vow till death do-us-bark at the Darwin Ski Club at the end of the month.
It’s a love story that’s ruff around the edges and puts a smile on anyone’s face who hears about it.
When Deb Taipale was faced with the news that her beloved pooch Peggy Weggy Woo Button Face had terminal cancer, she immediately told her Facebook friend Rocket Bretherton.
Although the pair had never met, Ms Taipale and Ms Bretherton had previously bonded together online over the fact they both have no kids but own a rescue dog and joked about their canines marrying each other.
With the arrival of Peggy’s bad news, it was now or never for the pair of pooches.
“It’s going to be a proper wedding, music, cheers, we’ll have a little wedding certificate and then we’ll go and smash beers at the bar,” Ms Taipale said.
“It went from this little joke to this huge wedding that’s probably going to be bigger than mine.”
The 53-year-old Humpty Doo resident put the call-out to anyone who wanted to participate and be a part of the joyous event and people responded.
The ABC program Tales from the Tinny host Andy Warton will be the celebrant, wedding vehicles and Harley-Davidsons have been graciously loaned by friends and flowers have been donated by a local florist.
Initially, Ms Taipale said she was not sure how the two dogs first meeting would go but Peggy’s reaction made it clear that Ollie was not barking up the wrong tree.
“It’s an arranged marriage but they fell in love when he proposed,” she said.
“When they first met she was so excited to see him she was doing zoomies around the shed.
“His head is bigger than her whole body, he’s massive but they love each other.
“Peggy hates everyone but she loves him.”
Peggy, a 13-year-old Jack Russell, and Ollie the seven-year-old red nose pit bull will exchange vowels on Sunday, October 30 at 4pm.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
Ms Taipale said it was a way of making the most of Peggy’s remaining life while putting smiles on faces and raising money.
The engagement has already raised $500 from generous donations of local businesses.
All proceeds will be donated to the animal welfare organisation PAWS Darwin.
Ms Taipale said wedding gifts were not necessary but urged for attendees or anyone who would like to support to donate upon arrival at the wedding.
They aim to raise $1000 in total.
“We’d love everyone to come along,” she said.
