Much more than an outdoor gallery, the Darwin Street Art Festival is returning bigger and better this year with a program that spans cinema, workshops and skating competitions.
The 2023 action-packed schedule includes an exclusive documentary screening showcasing some of the world’s best female graffitists, Papua New Guinean street art and a Darwin photographer’s solo exhibition debut.
Festival Director David Collins said he was proud the program had as many local artists as it did “big names from interstate and across the world”.
Those on the local bill include Jason Lee, Jesse Bell and Tisha Tejaya.
“In 2023 we’ll see some epic murals, more emerging artist pop-ups, interactive workshops, exhibitions – and a lot of fun,” he said.
“Darwin is about to get a whole lot more colourful.”
Now in its seventh year, the festival will welcome Dublin’s Aches and the Irish artist’s globally-renowned large scale psychedelic murals, as well as Australian artists Adnate, Filthy Ratbag, Jeswri, Gonketa and Kitt Bennett.
Business, Jobs and Training Minister Paul Kirby said the annual festival had helped “transform” Darwin’s streets.
“It makes our beautiful city all the more beautiful, while providing blank canvasses for our artists to hone their craft, have a bit of fun, and create a unique attraction for tourists and locals to indulge upon,” he said.
“Darwin Street Art Festival also generates more foot traffic into our CBD, which means residents and visitors are supporting our local businesses and keeping our economy turning.”
The program’s first release is now online at darwinstreetartfestival.com.au, with more announcements to come.
Darwin Street Art Festival 2023 runs from August 28 to September 15.
