DARWIN green thumbs have made their biggest single-day deposit at the TOMRA recycling centre, with more than 64,000 cans and bottles handed in.
TOMRA Collection Solutions Darwin depot manager Damien Crook said that after a tough year, many people saw recycling cans as an easy way to make a little more pocket money.
“It’s good for the environment, plus it puts money in your pockets – that’s the main thing,” he said.
“I’ve got probably 15 regulars every day. They come in and get their $30 a day. It’s hot out there and it’s hard work but it all helps.”

The 64,000 collected on January 4 surpassed the previous record of 62,000 recorded just after Christmas in 2019.
Mr Crook said collecting cans also had a great impact on the community, with many recyclers donating their proceeds to TOMRA’s partner charity, Wildcare Darwin.
“A lot of people are going through our charities – that’s really good for the community,” he said.
“People just come in and hit the donate button. Whether it’s a couple of cents or a bit more, we’re seeing some generous donations.”
