Top End dumpling lovers are set to indulge in a feast for the senses on Saturday with the arrival of Darwin’s inaugural Dumpling Festival.
The brainchild of Nepalese eatery Yogi’s Way owner Bhairab Yogi, the evening festival will feature cooking demonstrations, dumpling eating competitions, and family dumpling making contests, kids’ activities and live DJs.
Mr Yogi, who opened his Stuart Park restaurant in 2018, said there was a time when Nepalese dumplings – momos – were considered a luxury reserved only for festivals, due to the high price of the wheat needed to make the dough, but now they were his country’s most famous export.
“Everyone knows momos these days. I could eat momos for breakfast, lunch and dinner,” Mr Yogi said.
Mr Yogi said while momos would be the hero dumpling of the festival, multiple countries’ cuisines would be represented among the nine stallholders – including some you may not expect, with ravioli and empanadas making the cut as types of dumpling.
Gorging yourself on a kaleidoscope of dumplings is only half of what the festival is all about.
Mr Yogi said registrations for the festival’s competitions were running strongly and that there was a chock-a-block afternoon of kids’ activities to ensure mums and dads had no qualms about coming down for a feed.
The inaugural Darwin Dumpling Festival will be held at Darwin Waterfront on Saturday from 4–8.30pm.
Entry to the festival is free, although registrations for the dumpling eating and family dumpling making competitions are filling up fast.
