Travelling to more than 50 locations across the nation, popular Darwin comic Amy Hetherington is set to take on her biggest tour yet.

It was about 10 years ago Hetherington first tried her hand at comedy, and it all started as a dare for a fundraiser, she said.

“I didn’t do comedy until I moved to Darwin, and Darwin is one of those places where you just have a go at something and all of a sudden it becomes your full time job,” Hetherington said.

“I have never thought of myself as a comedian but was doing a fundraiser for Healthy Harold which was a gimmick of ‘dare me to do something you wouldn’t do sober’, and someone said I’d never do comedy.

“I got up and had a crack and loved it, and that was over 10 years ago now and I’ve been performing ever since, but still keeping Darwin as my home base because that’s where all the fun stuff happens.”

Hetherington said there was something ‘unique’ about her perspectives on life in the NT compared to other comics around the nation.

“It’s exciting to travel with the comedy… I like sharing Darwin stories outside of here because people have a connection with the NT and they like hearing stories,” she said.

“It’s a unique perspective to all those people in Sydney and Melbourne that call themselves Aussie comics but actually live in a CBD and have never had a mud crab turn up in their back yard before.

“We have a very different world up here and I love sharing that.”

Hetherington’s exciting 50 leg tour will kick-start in January 2025, and will see her travel to regional locations across South Australia and Western Australia before performing at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and locations in Queensland.

With more than 20,000 kilometres of driving scheduled, Hetherington said the goal was taking comedy to communities that would normally miss out during festivals.

“There’s nothing pretty about this kind of touring, it’s eating dim-sims out of roadhouses and sleeping in motels, being away from family, but there’s something real about going to a regional town and doing comedy where people really want it,” she said.

“Darwin gets it, not everyone comes up here on tour and when they do everyone gets really excited, so I try to do that with the way that I do these tours now.”
