UPDATE: TERRITORY Labor have revealed their candidate for the Daly by-election, which has been penciled in for September 11.

Dheran Young, a former advisor to Chief Minister Michael Gunner and Aboriginal Affairs Miniter Selena Uibo, will contest the seat.

The party said Mr Young had lived in the Territory for eight years, including four in Wadeye.

The newly selected candidate promised he would work had for the Territory.

“I was raised by my teacher mum to always look out for others and lend a hand where you can,” Mr Young said.

“My number one priority is protecting the Daly region from the pandemic and from the CLP’s dangerous plan to open up our borders and give away our vaccines to Sydney.

“I want to make sure rural and remote communities have access to the same level of services and opportunities as Territorians living in town.”

EARLIER: THE by-election for the Legislative Assembly seat of Daly will be on September 11.

The Northern Territory Administrator, Vicki O’Halloran, issued the writ for the by-election on Thursday following the resignation of the CLP’s current MLA Ian Sloan.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner confirmed he met the Administrator to ask her to issue a writ for a by-election in the Division of Daly, to be held on Saturday, September 11.

The electoral roll for the by-election will close at 5pm Friday.

Nominations for candidates will close at noon on Thursday, August 26.

Northern Territory Electoral Commissioner Iain Loganathan said with such a tight time frame for the election to be held, there is less than 24 hours for Daly electors to make sure they are correctly enrolled to vote in the by-election.

Country Liberal party president Jamie Debrenni said he expects the party will announce its candidate to replace Mr Sloan this weekend.

“The process is under way,” Mr Debrenni said. “We are expecting by the end of this weekend we will have a candidate to introduce to the people of the Daly electorate.

“I will be flying to Darwin to do the introduction and announcement with the leader of the CLP parliamentary team.

“We have had a very, very good number of expressions of interest.

“It has been absolutely outstanding.

“I want to thank Ian for being part of our parliamentary team and it is unfortunate that health issues forced him to make the decision to resign.

“However, it is great to see people putting their hand up to be our representative in Daly.

“It is reassuring that people believe that we have the right team to get the Territory out of the mess this government has got the Territory into.”

Mr Gunner signalled the pandemic will again have a role to play in the Labor Party’s campaign tactics.

“All elections offer a choice for Territorians,” Mr Gunner said.

“This by-election is no different, and the choice is clear – a Territory Labor government that will protect the people of Daly from the Covid pandemic, or a CLP who would open up our borders and give our vaccines to Sydney.”
