TO mark their 25th wedding anniversary Brett and Barbara Bates had matching ‘CU in the NT’ tattoos inked on their shins — a permanent reminder of their love for each other and the Territory.

“We wanted something that represents true Aussies,” Brett said.

“My daughter wasn’t impressed, she’s 23. Our kids are a bit more prim and proper than we are.”

The Victorian couple flew up to Darwin for their silver anniversary, a place they’d been wanting to visit for a long time.

“I’d never been, and I’ve always wanted to go,” Brett said.

“My wife has never been on a plane, we wanted to celebrate it properly.

“I love it, I’d move up here in a heartbeat.”

Brett and Barbara, who met in high school, tied the knot on March 12, 1994 and have five kids together — aged between six and 23.

While up in Darwin, they read about Darwin council voting to ban CU in the NT merchandise from being sold in its markets.

In part, the decision inspired the couple to have the words tattooed on to their skin. Brett said their tattooist at Darwin Custom Tattoos advised them to get just the outline of the words, so it would be less noticeable.

“Work has asked me to cover it up,” Brett said.

Brett and Barbara also visited Litchfield National Park, Katherine Gorge, and the jumping crocs while in the NT.

NT Unofficial congratulated Brett and Barb on reaching the milestone.

“We’re thrilled they will forever encourage every person they encounter to visit the Northern Territory,” it said.

“Our hearts are truly warmed.”
