THE NT Government will freeze electricity, water and car registration fees as a part of a $65 million stimulus package to bolster the economy in the face of the coronavirus crisis.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner said they will freeze government fees and charges, including electricity, water and car registration, until July 1, 2021.

In light of the ban on non-essential indoor gatherings of more than 100 people, the NT will also bring in a $5 million Business Structural Adjustment package to assist businesses who need to make physically adjustments to meet the 100 person rule.

It could also be used for businesses to establish or upgrade their online presence to adjust to changing behaviours of consumptions, with a higher demand for takeaways and delivery options.

Mr Gunner said all businesses can apply, but they will be focusing on the hospitality sector first, such as restaurants. He said terms and conditions and a hotline will be released soon.

Not-for-profit and community organisations, including clubs, will also be able to apply for up to $50,000 to undertake repairs, renovations and upgrades to their premises/facilities.

The grants will be matched dollar-for-dollar if the organisation also puts in their own $50,000.

Applications can get up to $200,000 on a dollar-for-dollar matching basis for amounts above $100,000.

The $65 million stimulus package also includes a Home Improvement Scheme, where all NT homeowners will receive $6000 for renovations and improvements to their property by a local business or tradie.

People will need to put in $2000 to receive the additional $6000 or alternatively they can put in $1000 and receive $4000.

Eligible businesses can also get $10,000 for upgrades as a part of the package’s Business Improvement Scheme to helping businesses attract more customers.

If a business wants to contribute its own $10,000, the government will pitch in an additional $10,000 for a total of $30,000.
