Chief Minister Michael Gunner welcomes federal budget, but Labor MP Luke Gosling slams it

The Chief Minister and his federal Labor colleague are at odds over Tuesday’s federal budget revealed by Josh Frydenberg.

Budget 2020: Winners and losers

CHIEF Minister Michael Gunner has reached across the political aisle and welcomed Josh Frydenberg’s big-spending budget.

But his glowing opinion is in stark contrast with federal Labor counterpart Solomon MP Luke Gosling, who slammed it as offering “next to nothing for the Top End”.

Mr Gunner, speaking late last night after the federal Treasurer spoke, compared the Commonwealth’s budget to his own.

“The federal budget – like the Territory Budget – is all about keeping the comeback going by controlling the virus and creating jobs,” he said.

“The Feds get that it is all about the comeback right now.”

Mr Gunner said welcomed the JobTrainer extension which would support up to 1600 Territorians to find employment.

He also welcomed measures to bring more workers into the Northern Territory amid a labour shortage, including apprenticeships and flexible visas for international students.

“I told ScoMo earlier in the month that the Territory is all about jobs and economic growth – and he listened,” he said.

But federal Labor have reacted far more negatively, with Solomon MP Luke Gosling lashing the Coalition’s record on apprentices.

“After promising 450,000 jobs through JobMaker last year but creating just 1,000 — including one single job in Darwin – how can Territorians believe any promises this Federal Government makes about jobs?”

Mr Gosling also questioned where $216m in funding for the Kakadu had gone and slammed no funding for the Veterans’ Wellbeing Centre.

“This Federal Government loves to overpromise and underdeliver.”
