Katherine enters three-day lockdown after NT's first case of community transmission

THE Northern Territory has recorded one new case of Covid-19 overnight, after a man in his 20s tested positive on Thursday.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the new case was a household contact from the man’s residence in Katherine.

There are five household contacts in Katherine, four of which have been tested and one of those positive.

The original case is now at the Centre for National Resilience at Howard Springs. All of his household contacts in Katherine will also be transferred to Howard Springs.

There are three close contacts from the man’s residence in Howard Springs, all of which have been tested and are in isolation for 14-days.

On Thursday night Mr Gunner confirmed the man was a contract worker on RAAF Base Tindal in Katherine. He is not vaccinated.

He developed symptoms on Tuesday and was tested on Wednesday. A firm positive was confirmed on Thursday evening.

The man works in Katherine but also resides in Humpty Doo. Mr Gunner said he had not recently travelled outside of the Northern Territory.

Fifty-three close contacts have been identified at the Katherine Club thus far. Thirty-six have been contacted and are in isolation with two negative results returned. Twenty-seven people are still being contacted. CCTV footage is being reviewed and will determine if close contacts must be reclassified.

Twenty colleagues of the man’s work in Katherine were identified as casual contacts. They are in isolation.

Acting Chief Health Officer Dr Charles Pain said while responses were swift, he urged Territorians to get vaccinated and tested if necessary.

“Our systems will be stressed but we’re prepared for that,” he said.

“Please come forward if you’re symptomatic to get tested.”
