A Nepalese student has been named the Northern Territory’s International Student of the Year for her work connecting other foreign students while in Australia.
Daisy Twayana, a Masters of Social Work student at Charles Darwin University, founded the Social Work Inclusive Student Society and also created a podcast project called “Being International”, both of which aim to enhance international students’ time studying abroad.
As well as dedicating her working hours to training up as a social worker and free time bringing together the international student community, Ms Twayana also donates crocheted products to not-for-profit organisation Wrap with Love.
“It is an honour to be recognised on Larrakia land, for my dedication for peer support for our international student community,” she said while accepting the award.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to those who have inspired me and never let me give up on my dreams.”
The awards were held at Darwin’s Parliament House to celebrate the achievements of some of the Territory’s 4900 international students.
Other awards given on the night were to student volunteer of the year Ruobin Zhang from China, alumni of the year Rifat Mahmuf from Bangladesh and Antonio’s Kitchen won the international student employer of the year award.
Ms Twayana said she hoped the annual awards would encourage more students like her to give the Territory and all its opportunities a go.
“By winning this award, I hope I can inspire other international students from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds to come out of their comfort zone, believe in themselves and dream big,” she said.
“I am motivated to continue my journey as a community member and critical social worker in my home away home..”
