AN accused carjacker allegedly kidnapped a toddler — then dumped him in the middle of a road in “peak hour” traffic.

Jake Yates, 20, has been committed to face charges including aggravated robbery, abduction, recklessly endangering life and recklessly endangering serious harm in the NT Supreme Court.

He remains in custody.

The vicitm Penny Christrup was clinging to the door of her $20,000 Toyota Aurion in a desperate bid to prevent Yates driving off — he allegedly put his foot down as her six-year-old son was exiting the car. The two-year-old was still in the car.

Prosecutor Steve Ledek said the two-year-old boy was not fully restrained.

He said Yates, who was allegedly caught in possession of ganja, abandoned the toddler “in the middle of a road without supervision during peak hour traffic, (and) that gave rise to a danger of death”.

He stole the mother’s handbag, Mr Ledek said.

The alleged crimes took place in the northern Darwin suburb of Tiwi on May 5.

Magistrate John Neill deemed the evidence sufficient to send the case to the Supreme Court.
