LOCAL vets are warning dog owners to urgently vaccinate their pets as an early parvovirus hits Palmerston.
The Ark Animal Hospital veterinary doctor Abby Masters said the outbreak had come earlier this year, with more intensity.
“We usually don’t start seeing it until it gets really humid,” Ms Masters said.
Earlier this week, the Palmerston vet had 10 canines require urgent vet attention after being infected with the highly contagious virus.
While parvovirus is common throughout the Top End, it appears to be heavily concentrated in Palmerston.
The puppy pictured, known only as “Gloria’s Dog” was rescued from a community after contracting the virus.
Parvovirus affects the gastrointestinal tract and cardiovascular systems of dogs.
While Gloria’s Dog received the medical attention required, the disease has had a severe impact on his stomach lining, and Ms Masters said his chances of survival were grim.
“If you notice any signs, bring it to the vet straight away because parvo can hit suddenly,” she said.
Puppies require three vaccines, one month apart, and then an annual vaccine after that.
“It’s really important for everyone to vaccinate dogs, because it does’t just protect your dog – it protects everyone else’s dogs as well,” Ms Masters said.
